As part of the VII International Forum-Festival “Intellectual Property for the Future” (VII Международный форум-фестиваль «Интеллектуальная собственность для будущего») (Saint Petersburg), a webinar of the Technology Transfer Center on artificial intelligence in patenting was held. The speaker was Anton Krivonogov (Антон Кривоногов) — an inventor, Patent Attorney of the Russian Federation, and creator of the AI patent service POSINT.
The event took place at the venue of the Government of Saint Petersburg (Правительство Санкт-Петербурга) and brought together specialists in intellectual property and technology transfer, patent attorneys, as well as representatives of scientific and educational organizations interested in the effective commercialization of the results of intellectual activity.
Anton Krivonogov gave a talk on the topic “Artificial Intelligence in Patenting: Overcoming Hidden Barriers to Licensing IP Results”. During the talk, the speaker covered three key blocks: licensing of IP results in actual reality, hidden barriers to licensing and the reasons for their emergence, and how artificial intelligence changes the current situation.
The head of our team drew the audience’s attention to a paradoxical but telling fact: 95% of IP results are not licensed not because of a lack of technologies, but because of hidden barriers — a narrow patent claim, unclear patent clearance, and the absence of a well-thought-out commercialization strategy at early stages.
95% of those who patent do not know this: in 2026, AI makes it possible to identify and eliminate these barriers already at the stage of preparing the application, rather than after the patent is obtained, when it is almost impossible to correct anything. This requires a key shift in the focus of the entire patent community: instead of the question “can it be patented?”, it is necessary to ask the question “can it be licensed without risks?”
Special attention was paid to the concept of IP results as a liquid asset. The speaker recalled that the Concept of Technological Development of Russia (Концепция технологического развития России) requires a 2.4-fold increase in patent activity. “We do not need growth in the number of patents,” emphasized Anton Krivonogov, “we need growth in the number of liquid assets.”
Webinar participants highly appreciated the presented approach, noting the relevance of the topic and the practical significance of using AI tools to improve the quality of patent applications and their subsequent commercial attractiveness.
We thank the organizers of the VII International Forum-Festival “Intellectual Property for the Future” and the Technology Transfer Center for the invitation and the opportunity to speak at such a significant venue. Webinars of this format make it possible to draw the attention of the professional community to the real problems of licensing IP results and to offer specific ways of solving them using modern technologies.
